The 2005 Arizona DHIA Annual Awards Banquet
Recently, AZDHIA held its Annual Awards Banquet. Below are two of the presentations made that evening, the first by Neil Hoffman and the second by Fred Kniesly.
"As preparations were made for this year’s annual meeting and sponsors were reviewed, one individual stood out as being of special interest. We wish to recognize the accomplishments and support to AZDHIA of Arnaldo Burgos.
Arnaldo advanced his academic preparation with dairy graduate degrees at Southern Illinois University and Purdue University. He became the director of dairy nutrition with AgriKing, Inc in Fulton, Illinois from 1973 to 1977.
In 1977 he decided to leave AgriKing and begin his own dairy nutrition business, Dairy Nutrition Services, Inc. He began working with dairymen such as Tom Dugan, Pete Burgeson, Henry Kibler, Manuel Caballero, Gerben Boschma and Conrad Gingg.
Over the years Arnaldo has established a number of ancillary enterprises in support of his nutrition work on dairies. The main nutrition service is provided by Dairy Nutrition Services, Inc. Forage and feed analysis are provided by Chandler Analytical Laboratories. Mineral mixes and pelletized supplements are manufactured by Animal Nutrition Systems. And more recently, a manufacturing division, Tarome, Inc., has been added to provide a bypass fat product marketed under the brand name Maxxer.
A few other business ventures that have been established over the years include:
- a farm in Honduras with 100 dairy and 300 beef animals,
- Dairy Nutrition Services Mexico which only serves dairies in Mexico,
- Superior Supplements, a mineral sales division in Tulare, California,
- Gordita, a real estate business,
- Armawi, a trucking transportation company,
- and Rio Blanco Dairy near Maricopa, Arizona.
In all Arnaldo employs over seventy five people of whom four hold Phd’s.
He has and currently still serves many dairies in the mid-west and western states. Outside the U.S. he has worked in countries such as Spain, Holland, and China. Currently, he still works in Mexico and Saudi Arabia. Overall, his company feeds over 200,000 milking cows.
We extend to you, Arnaldo Burgos, our commendation for your outstanding achievements and express our gratitude for your cooperation and support of Arizona DHIA."

"When asked about his reaction to the news that Yettem Dairy was to receive the Outstanding Herd Management Award, Emilio Lopez responded that it was award for the cows. That is how Yettem Dairy is managed. The focus is on the welfare and comfort of the cows.
Emilio began working with cows as a teenager. He came to the United States in 1982. He began working for Jon Van Ryn at his Visalia dairy in 1992. Jon, an associate with Schuil and Associates in Tulare, California, owns a dairy in Visalia and is associated with dairies at Deming, NM, Clovis, NM, and a spec dairy on Vicksburg Road in Arizona as well as Yettem Dairy at Coolidge, Arizona.
Emilio emphasizes that the staff at Yettem Dairy is working for the cows. As a manager his duty is to maintain a happy staff, to encourage all to do their best, for himself to learn from his mistakes, and to encourage all to work cooperatively as a team.
The staff is charged with the responsibility to constantly to be on the alert for sick or stressed cows. As an illustration, two pushers are sent to the corrals to bring the cows to the parlor so that they can better observe cows that are sick or debilitated.
Emilio credits much of his success by what he has learned from others. He makes extensive use of advice that he receives from nutritionists, veterinarians, sales representatives, and extension personnel. He wishes to make a special acknowledgement of the help that he has received over the years from Dr. Abraham du Plesso, a nutritionist that worked with Emilio in the past.
For the future Emilio plans to continue doing the best job possible for the cows. He will continue to emphasize the benefits of good team work and employ people who are capable and willing to work together.
The 2005 Outstanding Herd Management Award goes to Emilio Lopez at Yettem Dairy, Coolidge, Arizona."
